Sustainable Cities

By 2050, China’s urban population is expected to reach 1.17 billion, up from 494 million today. Whether China follows the sprawl-oriented development patterns of the west, or instead defines a low-energy, low-carbon development path, is the central challenge to be addressed. The China Sustainable Cities Program (CSCP) supports efforts to reduce carbon emissions and air pollution in new and existing Chinese cities by promoting sustainable urbanization and transportation systems development.

To ensure that urban development follows the greenest possible path, CSCP’s focus will be in two areas: sustainable urban layout and sustainable transportation systems. Our work is centered on the following:

Development of comprehensive pilot projects that integrate sustainable urban planning and green transportation;

National and provincial policy development and outreach to promote pilot replication; and

Enhancement of local technical capacity.
