| Sino-U.S. International Workshop Concerning the Law on the Prevention and Control of Atmospheric Pollution |

On November 3, 2008, CEMP hosted a workshop Concerning the Law on the Prevention and Control of Atmospheric Pollution at the Hotel Nikko New Century in Beijing, as requested by the Department of Pollution Prevention of the Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP). A group of experts from various US and Chinese agencies reviewed the US Clean Air Act and China’s Law on the Prevention and Control of Atmospheric Pollution. Chinese experts detailed progress on the amendment of the Law on the Prevention and Control of Atmospheric Pollution. US experts presented relevant experiences from the US Clean Air Act for reference in formation of Chinese air pollution policymaking. The policy discussion focused on regional and urban air pollution management, strengthening supervision of motor vehicle pollution, total emissions control legislation and strict liability etc. Senior experts from the Natural Resources Defense Council and Environmental Defense Fund participated in the meeting. Policy recommendations based on the proceedings of the workshop will be submitted to the Ministry of Environmental Protection.
