Energy Foundation China Holds 16th Senior Policy Advisory Council

 

The Energy Foundation China hosted its “16th Senior Policy Advisory Council” in Beijing on November 15th 2013. The theme of the conference was “Reinventing Fire: Contributing to China’s Energy Production and Consumption Revolution”. At the conference, experts discussed the transformation of China’s mode of economic development and its energy strategy adjustment, and explored the opportunities and challenges for China’s energy production.

The conference was moderated by Colburn S. Wilbur, Chair of the Senior Policy Advisory Council. Mr. Xu Kuangdi, Vice Chairman of the 10th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and Former President of the Chinese Academy of Engineering delivered the opening speech. Dr. Liu Shijin, Vice Minister of the Development Research Center of the State Council, delivered the keynote speech. With due consideration to energy conservation and emission reduction, Dr. Liu Shijin said, China should try its utmost to enhance economic growth and improve people’s living standards.

The meeting also welcomed three prominent experts to share their research and policy recommendations about China’s future energy strategy. Amory B. Lovins, chief scientist at the U.S.-based Rocky Mountain Institute, and Dai Yande, Deputy Director General of the Energy Research Institute of the National Development and Reform Committee (NDRC), introduced their “reinventing fire” project, which will explore the economic, social, and environmental benefits of more rapidly deploying renewables and energy efficiency technologies in China. Wang Zhongying, Deputy Director General of Energy Research Institute, NDRC, and Director of the China National Renewable Energy Center, introduced a high renewable energy penetration scenario and roadmap for China by 2050.

Dr. Lin Jiang, Senior Vice President of the Energy Foundation reported on the foundation’s projects in 2013, while Eric Heitz, President of the Energy Foundation, invited guests to offer their views on the Energy Foundation’s priorities in China for 2014.

At the end of the meeting, Mao Rubai, Chairman of the Environmental Protection and Resources Conservation Committee, National People’s Congress, and Colburn S. Wilbur gave summary speeches. Mao shared his belief that this conference was both inspirational and productive in generating ideas for the Energy Foundation’s work going forward.
