A New Network Established for Personal Carbon Accounting

On June 15, the Inclusive Carbon Accounting Network was established at the celebration event of the 2022 National Low Carbon Day hosted by China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment and Shandong Province.

The network was co-initiated by the ministry’s Center for Environmental Education and Communications (CEEC), the All-China Environment Federation, the China Internet Development Foundation, the International Cooperation Center of the National Development and Reform Commission, and the China Ecological Civilization Research and Promotion Association, with the support of Energy Foundation China.

The network is a voluntary, non-profit platform that will be used for collaboration on research, dissemination, education, demonstration, standards formulation, and opinion sharing, in an effort to promote personal carbon accounting across the country, create an atmosphere of a green lifestyle, and facilitate the low carbon transition.

Personal carbon accounting, as an innovative mechanism, connects emission reductions in consumption and production by guiding the public’s low carbon behavior through tools such as business incentives, favorable policy, and certified emission reduction trading, said Chengchuan TIAN, CEEC’s Director-General. Putting together, individual green behavior can become a great momentum of decarbonization. In addition to being an important guide for the public to lead a green life, it can also be a key field for carbon finance innovation, and thus a springboard for China to achieve its carbon peaking and neutrality goals, according to Mr. TIAN.
