In June 2023, with the support of the Energy Foundation China, Peking University Planning and Design Institute and Beijing CityDNA jointly released this report estimating the potential carbon reductions that good planning for urban neighborhoods can possibly achieve.

Taking Shanghai (excluding its Chongming Island) as an example, the authors of the report first identify the influencing factors of carbon emissions from residents’ travel and home energy consumption behavior, before they assess the carbon mitigation potential in both traveling and residential sectors. Having incorporated spatial planning policy issues into the study, the authors hope their work can help provide scientific evidence for future policy recommendations.
