In June 2023, Shanxi Coshare Innovation Institute of Energy and Environment released this report analyzing how to achieve just transition in counties of the coal-dependent Chinese province Shanxi. Energy Foundation China supported the research.

The report selects typical county areas in the province for field research. Within the framework of just transition analysis, it identifies the impacts of gradually phasing out the coal industry on workers, enterprises, and the economy in major coal-producing counties in Shanxi, where hosts the biggest coal workforce among provinces in China.

The aim of the report is to help improve the well-being of those will be affected by the transition, explore feasible measures for county areas to diversify their economy, create high-quality employment opportunities, while also protecting the eco-system and the environment.
