The Director, Strategic Partnerships will establish, strengthen, and steward funders to Energy Foundation China (EFC) by directing content development for major proposals and reports, representing EFC at meetings with current and prospective donors, and drafting compelling case studies and funder communications. As a representative of EFC outside of China, the Director will also support EFC’s international engagement and cooperation.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategy & Leadership

  • In close collaboration with the Strategic Partnerships team, help prioritize fundraising for EFC and the field by designing customized strategies and campaigns to expand EFC’s donor networks and deploy appropriate engagement tactics in Europe, the U.S., and China.
  • Devise appropriate strategies to properly navigate the complex, networked world that EFC operates in.
  • Work in conjunction with EFC’s Board, leadership, and senior program staff to develop plans that leverage existing relationships and coordinate smart combinations of EFC’s teams to expertly match them with donor profiles and requirements.
  • Craft compelling stories and messaging to facilitate sophisticated engagement.
  • Represent EFC internationally as needed, both for fundraising as well as international cooperation and engagement.

Prospecting, Cultivation, & Stewardship

  • Help build a larger pipeline of prospective high-net-worth and institutional donors through research, analysis, and relationship building.
  • Coordinate with current partners and grantees to engage networks and expand EFC’s reach.
  • In collaboration with other team members, direct the development of materials to support engagement, including tailored fundraising packets, presentations, proposals, letters of inquiry, and jointly undertaking meetings with prospective partners, including with senior staff. Design and implement innovative and comprehensive plans for cultivating philanthropic support, including hands-on management of grant proposal processes and donor reporting, with a heavy emphasis on writing as well as facilitating the involvement of the program and finance teams where appropriate.
  • Ensure existing donors’ long-term commitment to EFC and the field as a whole, and maintain highly sophisticated and personal relationships with partners by conducting meaningful and regular contact with them.
  • Organize / coordinate events—e.g. workshops, webinars, site visits, etc.—as needed in support of fundraising and donor engagement.

Communications

  • Contribute to coordinated communications plans for target audiences that align with and support the work of the Strategic Partnerships team.
  • In coordination with communications staff, contribute to the development and writing of prospectuses, case studies, and other communications materials that identify and present strategic opportunities to traditional and non-traditional funders.
  • SUPERVISION
  • Reports to the Vice President, Strategic Partnerships and is a member of the Strategic Partnerships Department.

EXPERIENCE

  • A minimum of ten years of experience in a leadership position is required, ideally developing and implementing partnership, fundraising, and/or strategic outreach to support a multi-million dollar, multi-location organization. Demonstrated experience in securing seven-figure gifts or deals is highly desirable. Furthermore, the Director must have the proven ability to lead, engage, and collaborate with individuals across various disciplines, cultures, and backgrounds to achieve shared goals.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and relationship building skills, convening capabilities, confidence, and credibility as a key spokesperson and representative are all required. Experience across government, business, civil society, CSR, philanthropy, or some combination thereof is necessary.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and storytelling communication skills are essential attributes for the role. Candidates should have the proven ability to formulate and execute results utilizing strong analytical, critical decision- making, strategic planning, and project management skills.
  • Experience working internationally, especially with China, is strongly desired. Although Chinese language skills are not required, candidates who speak Chinese (Mandarin) will be preferred.
  • A demonstrated passion for solving climate change, including existing experience in the climate change / clean energy field.
