Introduction to the Industry Program
Accounting for 65% of energy consumption and 70% of carbon emissions in China, the industrial sector plays a critical role in emissions reduction. Given this massive energy demand, decarbonization of industry is essential not only to achieve carbon neutrality in China, but also to meet the global goal of limiting warming.
The Industry Program targets four strategic areas: structural transformation, demand reduction, energy efficiency, and low-carbon energy, across four key sectors: non-ferrous metals, petrochemicals, cement, and iron and steel. Through exploring sectoral strategies and goals, and advancing deep decarbonization approaches for heavy industry, the program aims to inform pathways toward early carbon peaking and carbon neutrality and identify other benefits of transition.
