With support from Energy Foundation China, the Innovation Center for Energy and Transportation released this report in July 2021 analyzing how China can electrify its commercial vehicle fleet faster to help achieve net-zero carbon emission goals for transportation, one of the hardest-to-abate sectors.

The report estimates the impact of vehicle electrification technologies—including battery electric, plug-in hybrid, and hydrogen fuel cells vehicles—on the energy consumption and carbon emissions of China’s commercial vehicle fleet for the next decades. Using two different policy scenarios, the report reveals when and at what levels the fleet could achieve zero emissions, as well as the challenges ahead. It concludes with targeted policy recommendations for commercial vehicles that the authors believe would be helpful for the achievement of China’s carbon peaking and neutrality goals.
