In July 2022, with the support of Energy Foundation China, the China Energy Storage Alliance released this report discussing an accelerated energy storage strategy and pathway for China’s new power system.

The report defines the key role of energy storage in supporting a renewable-dominant power system, summarizes international experience, identifies key technical elements and major constraints, and evaluates how it can help improve China’s power system. The report also proposes the pathway and key policies for energy storage deployment, as well as potential market mechanisms and new business models.

Based on an overview of the current status and policy outcomes of energy storage deployment in China, this research report presents policy recommendations for its scaled-up development in the future. The authors hope the report will be helplful for the achievement of China’s carbon peaking and neutrality goals.
