Background

At this event, we will launch a major Energy Foundation China flagship report on Electrification in China’s Carbon Neutrality Pathways. This report is the second in a series of synthesis reports on China’s long-term strategy for decarbonization. The first report, published in 2020, highlights China’s pathways towards carbon neutrality and transitions throughout the economy. This new report provides an overview of China’s new policies and energy and emissions trends since 2020. It also dives deep into the role of electricity, focusing on the double transitions of electrifying end-use sectors and decarbonizing the electricity sector to achieve China’s carbon neutrality target. This report particularly highlights the role of electrification and associated electricity system transformation in achieving China’s “30/60” goals, and identifies a set of near-term sectoral actions and long-term sectoral strategies that can be taken to accelerate electrification and power sector decarbonization to put China on a successful, low emissions growth pathway.

During the session, lead authors will present key findings and conclusions of the report, followed by a panel discussion of international scholars and experts on China's electrification pathways and policy recommendations concerning electricity system transformation and achievement of carbon neutrality as a whole. The launch event hopes to create an opportunity for international scholars and policy experts to share viewpoints and exchange opinions.
