| Year Two: National 20-Percent Energy Efficiency Target for 2010 |
|
Premier Wen Jiabao and Vice Premier Zeng Peiyan will head up a team tasked with ensuring the country's energy consumption and pollution reduction targets stated in the Chinese government's 2006-2010 Five-Year Plan are met. China has set a goal of reducing energy consumption per unit of GDP by 20 percent by 2010. Energy consumption, however, fell only 1.23 percent in 2006, well short of the annual goal of four percent. Premier Wen also urged more curbs on industries that consume more energy and release more pollutants in a bid to ensure a healthy and fast economic growth in a speech addressed to the national working teleconference on energy saving and pollutants reduction on April 27, 2007. |
